JAMIE BEATON, Co-Founder and CEO, Crimson Education “We do have students adding Singapore universities now to their school list who weren’t previously adding them. Anything that negatively affects American higher ed is a temporary boost to Singapore’s higher ed. You know, as a global competition, and students, of course, are shopping on the world stage.”
Singapore’s top universities may not have the brand power of Harvard or MIT, but the country has been steadily rising as a global talent hub.
PUSHAN DUTT, Professor of Economics, INSEAD “The brand value of Singapore schools have been improving because NUS is sort of in the top 10 of the rankings. NTU is in the top 20 of world rankings. The second thing that students care about is jobs. After they graduate, they should have a very promising career path. And here, the Singapore government actually does allow students to work part-time and the third thing is experience. Kids really want a good experience. So here coming to Singapore as a multicultural hub. Many education hubs will actually compete for it. But I think it requires a very holistic, whole economy approach.
You have to think about jobs, you have to think about making the degrees more valuable as new things like AI come into being, and also make sure that it’s overall an attractive place.”
Singapore’s six universities aren’t actively courting Harvard students, but the Ministry of Education has reassured Singaporeans studying in the US that they are welcome to continue their education back home.
And as US policies around international education grow more unpredictable, some experts say this could be Singapore’s moment. By building world-class universities, partnering with top institutions, and staying agile in a fast-changing environment, Singapore is quietly positioning itself not just as a safe haven, but as a top destination for global talent.
