Phase 3 of MOE’s Primary One Registration is meant for non-Singapore Citizen (SC) / non-Permanent Resident (PR) children born between 2 Jan 2012 and 1 Jan 2013 (both dates inclusive) can seek admission to Primary One (P1) in 2019 during Phase 3 of the 2018 P1 Registration Exercise.
Only those who have submitted the online indication of interest will be notified by MOE in October 2018 whether they can be offered a primary one place in the school for 2019 intake.
The online indication of interest is closed now, last day was on 11 June 2018.
We have received many calls from parents who missed and/or did not submit the online indication of interest form through the MOE P1 website. If you did not submit this on the last day, 11 June 2018, there will be no chance that your kid will be offered a seat for Primary One 2019 intake.
If this happened, what are the possible alternative educational pathways for your child in 2019?
Non-Singapore Citizen (SC) / non-Permanent Resident (PR) children, that has submitted the indication of interest, will be centrally posted based on vacancies that remain after all SCs/PRs have registered and been allocated places in earlier phases. Admission is not guaranteed as there are limited vacancies remaining for non-SC / non-PR children after places are allocated to SC/PR children. Parents of non-SC/non-PR children are advised to consider other educational options such as private schools.
Broadly, we can suggest two alternatives for your child depending on the plan you have for your child.
Option 1 – AEIS Test for 2020 P2 Entrance
Majority of parent to prefer their children joining the mainstream, also known as , government school. Children, who did not get a place for year 2019 primary one (P1), can prepare themselves for primary two (P2) intake in year 2020. This can be done through Ministry of Education’s (MOE) centralised test known as AEIS (Admissions Exercise for International Students). AEIS test will be conducted in the month of September or October every year. The AEIS registration period is in July to August. If you decided to let your child to sit for this test, you need to make sure you do the registration online before the deadline (MOE will announce the date). The AEIS fee is S$672.00 (inclusive of GST).
In this MOE’s centralised test, your child will be tested on two main subject, English and Mathematics. It is to assess the applicant’s English literacy, numeracy and reasoning ability.
From the time his/her K2 graduation, your child will have about one year to prepare for this test. It is basically preparing your children with P1’s English and Mathematics syllabus so your child will be ready for P2 in 2020.
Please note that admission to mainstream is not guaranteed, and is subject to the applicant’s performance in the test. Applicants will need to be successful in the AEIS to be eligible for school admission.
Unsuccessful applicants may re-apply to take the next AEIS or S-AEIS at the same or higher level, subject to meeting the permissible age-ranges for the level. Alternatively, they may wish to consider education in other school systems.
Option 2 – International School
The most direct solution for foreign students who did not get place in local mainstream schools is to enrol into international school. It is much less complex and less time consuming process to get your children place in a school.
Singapore has an extensive list of international schools to choose from. International schools offer academically sound curricula, rich extra-curricular activities, motivated teachers, creative learning environments and excellent support systems for global families on the move.
There are more than 30 foreign system schools (FSS) or international schools in Singapore. Beside FSS, there are three home-grown international privately-funded schools (PFS).
There are many factors to consider when choosing an international school, such as:
- Curriculum
- School Fees
- School Culture
- Admission Process
- Facilities & extracurricular activities
- Subjects/Languages offered
- Exam results and success
- Holiday and term time
- Location & Commute options
- Demographic and Population: Class size/Student:Teacher ratio
The first option is more challenging academically than the second however from cost perspective it is the other way around. Whichever option you take, there is always a winning strategy for what you plan for your children.
